Walla Walla Winery Profiles

Found in southeast Washington, the Walla Walla Valley AVA is part of the larger Columbia Valley AVA. The region is located in the foothills of the Blue Mountains with one third of its vineyards in Oregon. Varietals include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Syrah, Grenache, Viognier, and Sangiovese.

Creating single varietal wines that are true to the vintage and soil is the driving philosophy behind Balboa Winery. Tom Glase takes us out to his vineyard, an ancient river bed, to show us how the deep rocky soils help him create distinctive Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Malbec. You'll learn how his years of experience working with Walla Walla grapes and one of the area's top growers, Tom Waliser, has helped him create wines that truly reflect where they are grown.

The eighth winery in Walla Walla, their limited-production red wines are carefully crafted from some of the best wine grapes in the state. Rick's energy and enthusiasm for winemaking are contagious as he discusses the history of the area, his success with Bordeaux reds, and experimenting with new varietals. We'll venture out to the vineyard and learn about cultivating grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc in the rolling hills of southeastern Washington.
